Jungle

Professor Green ft Maverick Sabre - Jungle - 2011 found on Hip-Hop

This song is by Professor green who is a rapper that is very famous in the rap and hip-hop genre, this song is giving the idea that the streets are like a jungle where many bad things happen, there is a line in the song that says ‘you wouldn’t want to spent a night in this jungle’ meaning a lot of people wouldn’t like it because it is quite dangerous and a lot of crime happens. It says a lot ‘right here in this jungle’ etc. This is giving the idea to the target audience which seems to be teenagers as there are many featured in this video that there is a different life than being in a bad place and committing crimes. It is very effective that they are actually there in ‘the jungle’ when singing about it as it relates them to it and with the people which adds a good effect as it makes what he is saying seem more realistic.

Game Over

Tinchy Stryder, Giggs, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Example, Chipmunk - Game Over found on Club

This is a song that is done by many artists in the genre in which we are going to explore in our music video.

NO GOOD

NO GOOD Video - ARTISTdirect Music

This music video is quite simple in the sense that it doesn’t include anything else but him being in his house with a lot of things going on around him. He may have used the effect of furniture and things moving around by themselves to give the idea that things are controlled by something else and he can’t control things. The chorus of the song is effective as it says –
That's no good to me,
I don't no need nobody.
(That's no good to me.)
Don't need no-one
That's no good to me.
That's no good to me,
I don't no need nobody.
(That's no good to me.)
Don't need no-one
That's no good to me.
These words are backed up by the video as he is in the video by himself in his house with a lot of things happening around him.

Ideas for our final piece

We are now deciding on what song we are going to use. Hannah has posted some potential music and we are now thinking of what we can do in our music video, what kind of video we are going to create and what ideas we are going to portray; whilst bearing in mind how we can link our CD cover to the ideas that we are going to show.

a grand dont come for free

‘A grand don’t come for free’, this CD cover is from the streets but is an earlier album than ‘the hardest way to make an easy living’ this CD cover only has a picture of a bus shelter; the bus shelter has purposely been made to look like it is in a run down area; this maybe the aim of the artists as they may want to suggest to a target audience that they can come far and get out of ‘the streets’. The CD cover has the same man as ‘the hardest way to make an easy living however he is dressed differently in a warmth coat. The fact that he is stood at the bus shelter maybe suggesting that he is homeless and has no where to go; this contrast with the other album cover which suggests now he has a flash car and dresses differently. ‘The streets’ name is also on a lighter which maybe used for the same reason. The typography of the album title is in lower case which they may have used to give the idea that they are just everyday people as upper case letters are used to show importance.

the hardest way to make an easy living

‘The hardest way to make an easy living’ the first thing we notice when we see when we see this advert is the quite big posh car which we don’t expect to see as we see them as being average people from ‘the streets’. The album title is good as it suggests that he is making a living from his songs. The streets are a band that makes grime, electronica and hip hop songs. On the album cover he is outside when it is nearly dark this shows that maybe he once lived on the streets; the fact that he is stood on a street with a car and trees behind him may be being used to reflect the band name. The band name is on a picture of a lighter which is an everyday object that people are used to seeing, this may have been used to reflect the fact that they are just everyday people and do everyday things. He seems to be quite dressed up with a blazer on, this might be to suggest that he has came along way since being on ‘the streets’. We might use a similar idea when making our CD cover, however we are not sure yet as we arent sure what we are going to do in our video yet.

Alive till I'm dead

This album cover is quite simple and has no obvious connotations, there is a close up picture of professor green and we immediately see his tattoo which shows us that he is quite original as not many people have very daring tattoos like that. He is in everyday clothing; although we can only see the top of his jacket he seems quite casual as he is just wearing a normal everyday coat. His facial expression is quite bland as he isn’t really showing much emotion. He is looking up which may connote that he is moving up in life and his life is changing. The typography is a green-ish colour which has connotations of jealousy and may be used to suggest that people are jealous of him as his life is changing. However I think the real connotation of the colour is freedom as it is more turquoise which is similar to the colour of the sea.

The defamation of Strickland Banks

This album cover is Plan b’s second album cover ‘the defamation of Strickland banks’ I have found that Strickland banks is a fictional character played by plan b. Many of the songs are about ‘Strickland banks’ there are a few love songs which may be him promoting the idea that it is okay to talk about love etc. The cover is effective as it is very dark; most of it is black which has connotations of evil and danger, as does the colour red which is the colour of the bottom of the stage that he is sitting on, however the red also may be used to connote the love that he talks about in some of his songs. There is a very noticeable spotlight shining on him which may be used to give the idea that he has came out from a bad time and is now in a good place or maybe to suggest that he has changed as a person; white is used a lot to connote purity which it is being used for here. The board above him with the album title on it seems to be quite old fashioned; the type of board that would be on an old cinema, this may be used just to give good effect or to tell the audience that Strickland banks is a character that he plays when he is performing. He is sitting with his head down which could be him taking a bow or showing how he feels. The album cover is quite simplistic but very effective.

Who needs actions when you've got words

This CD cover is from plan b’s first album called ‘who needs actions when you’ve got words’ immediately we see the kind of image he is trying to promote; the graffiti connotes that he is singing about a run down place where there is a lot of crime. It is on a brick wall which gives the idea that youths have done the graffiti out of boredom (this is the stereotypical idea that is given by all types of media). The wall is shown to be dirty which also represents the idea that the CD is about a run down place. We immediately are given an idea of what type of genre it might be; it is a hip hop/grime album which is the type of music video we want to create. The title ‘who needs actions when you’ve got words’ is effective as it is promoting the idea that violence and crime should not go ahead because words are enough to sort anything out. This is effective as the target audience of the album which is teenagers may listen to this and not be as violent and commit crimes. This is good as Plan b may be someone who the aspire to be like and by him promoting this idea then the teenagers that it is aimed at may change the way they live.

CHANGE OF PLAN

Due to recent discussion we have decided to change our coursework to brief one which is a music video, we have decided to do this because we feel like it will be a change as it is something new as doing a trailer is quite similar to our foundation portfolio and it would be a challenge to explore a different type of media. First I will analyse some CD covers as we will have to make one to accompany our music video, then I will analyse some music videos and do a trial run of our video to help us with the ideas we want to promote.

Saw trailer

This trailer is very effective as it begins with a man being watched and not knowing if someone is there or not, we see him being very stressed as he does not know who is there, we then see something jump up to the camera which makes the audience jump as it is very dark; the sound effect at this point is also very effective as it is a screech which is quite scary for the audience. The whole setting throughout the trailer is very dark and dingy which reflects the mood of the film as it is about scaring people and torturing them. Immediately after we see something jump up to the camera the sound goes very loud with a thunder and lightning sound, then the lionsgate logo comes up and straight after the twisted pictures logo comes up. While showing the distribution logos the trailer still manages to keep the feeling of terror throughout the trailer. The sound effects at this point are also very effective as in-between the logos it has a heartbeat which suggests the fear that the film will give. After this point it shows 2 men which seem like prisoners in a dirty room. Then the is a strange sound and the puppet face appears, this is spooky as it is unfamiliar to the audience.  We then see the men being watched on tv which reinforces the idea that they are prisoners. The trailer then cuts to an image of lots of newspapers with information about ‘the jigsaw killer’ there is then a voiceover saying ‘the jigsaw killer’ which is very eerie. We then see a man behind barbed wire and trying to get out; this again reinforces the image that this man keeps prisoners. The spooky voice then says that if this man doesn’t get out then his girlfriend will die, this is very hard to comprehend with as no one can imagine being in that situation, this makes the audience want to watch further as they want to see what the man ends up doing.  The words ‘MADMAN’ then come up on the screen with an effective sound effect. We then see police investigating the scene which is very gripping as it means the audience will want to see what happens to him. We then see the man saying ‘He wants us to cut through our feet’ this is unimaginable to the audience and makes them cringe but it is a bigger reason to go and see the film because they need to see what happens. We then hear the voiceover say ‘you are ungrateful to be alive’ this makes the man seem strange as the people don’t seem to be. The trailer then cuts to a girl saying ‘help me’ after being told she is a drug addict and has been picked by the man because of this. There is a lot of emotion shown as we see the man intouch with his girlfiend on the phone but we are unsure what happens as the trailer ends which is effective as it will mean that people go to the cinema to see it. One of the last images in the trailer is of the man sawing his leg this is effective as it scares the audience. At the end there are many different slips of the film at this point in order to get the audience gripped and wondering what is going to happen.

Saw 2 poster

This is the poster for saw 2, i have recently analysed the trailer for this film. It links with the trailer as we see the puppet face that is shown a lot in the trailer this puppet is the thing that tells the people what they have to do for 'the games'. The fingers are significant as they are dirty and broken which relate to the theme portrayed in the trailer of darkness and dirtiness. The quote on this poster which is ' Oh yes... there will be blood' this is sgnificant as it reinforces to the audience what they have already heard in the trailer, when the puppet says this in the trailer it is one of the last things that he says so it sticks in the audiences mind which will remind them to go and see the film. The typography is also significant as it is reinforcing the gory and dirty feel in which the advertising is showing.

Saw 2 trailer

We have watched this saw 2 trailer, it is very effective as it follows many of the codes and conventions of trailers such as jump cuts, fade to blacks and a scary voiceover. It uses many clips from the film which adds a sense of suspicion as obviously the audience hasn’t seen it before and it makes them want to see what is going to happen to the people that are featured. At the start it begins with a dark screen and simple white typography saying ‘Last Halloween’ the white typography may have been used to connote the innocence of the people that are going to be hurt by the person in the film. We immediately hear a character saying ‘he wants us to cut through our feet’ this is shocking to the audience as they wonder what they will see, also it causes them to want to see the movie to see what happens; the trailer immediately grabs the audiences attention. The whole feel of the trailer is dark and dirty which reflects the place that the characters are in. It then cuts to a girl saying ‘help me’ even though this is not a message to the audience it causes the audience to empathize with her as they will be worried. Straight after we see the girl say ‘help me’ it cuts to something in a bath, the shot is so quick that it does not allow the audience to see exactly what it is, this again adds tension. After nearly every clip there is a fade to black which adds to the evil feel of the trailer. There is a clip of a man smashing the room up which is open to interpretation as it could be that he has gone crazy or that he is trying to get out. It then cuts to the scary face that tells the people to do things on a television which suggests that they are imprisoned by him. It then shows a person doing something to their eye which suggests that they have to do what they are told by the face. He has a scary voice which says ‘I want to play a game’ this would cause the audience to be a bit frightened by him and what he is capable of. Immediately after the face is shown it cuts to the distribution company which is Lionsgate; this allows the audience to see who distributes it, the fact that it is a well known company may interest the audience as they will associate lionsgate with good films that they have seen before, this may cause them to want to see the film more. Straight after the lionsgate logo is shown the twisted pictures logo is shown. As they are showing the distributer logos they still keep the dark and spooky feel in order to keep the audience interested and wondering what is going to happen next. We then see a range of camera shots as the camera zooms into a cctv camera that is filming the prisoners, then the camera jumps to the screen in which they are being watched on. It then cuts to the voice saying ‘you are now breathing in deadly air’ and we see the people becoming more and more distressed which causes the audience to be stressed and wondering what is going to happen. We then hear the voice talking about how they will get out and then saying ‘let the game begin’ this is shocking as it isn’t a game it is very dangerous and people are going to b harmed, this makes the audience want to see the film as they want to see what happens to the people. The people tehn get more and more agitated as they don’t know what will happen to themselves. The trailer then fades to black and says ‘This Halloween’ the typography of this is red and black which both connote death danger and evil. The trailer then gives us an insight into many things that are going to happen for example the person in the oven as we see his hand against the glass. The sounds are very effective as it changes from screams to heartbeats and eerie sounds these are all very effective in scaring the audience and getting their attention. At the end it has a range of screens that say ‘the games continue’ etc the last screen is the date which makes the audience aware of when the movie comes out so that they go to see it.

A2 media product

We have decided that we are going to produce a flm trailer for our final product, we are going to produce a trailer for the sequel or the film in our opening sequence; this means for our research we will research into sequels and make a list of the codes and conventions of sequels and trailers, and when making our final piece we will follow the codes and conventions that we find.

Our A2 media product

We are currently deciding what brief we are going to use for our production, we are contemplateing a trailer as we feel like it would be good as we had many ideas for what would happen in the rest of our film after making our opening sequence, however no final decisions have been made and we may go ahead with a music video.
